Forging Connections Through Volunteering (and Food)

Volunteering at the Dew Drop Inn (DDI) Soup Kitchen with my United Way coworkers was one of the most rewarding days. Together with the DDI crew, we helped serve 425 meals, while they also handed out 85 hampers to seniors in our community.
This opportunity was a chance to connect with my colleagues in a meaningful way and to give back in a way that directly supports our partner, DDI. We got to meet some really cool people—both fellow volunteers and guests—who reminded me of how much our community pulls together.
One of the parts that stood out most was working with the seniors who both receive help and also help power the DDI kitchen. Their warmth, dedication, and contribution to the fun environment is there. The service was structured; everything ran like a well-oiled machine. Leadership was clear, positive, and deeply caring—so many moving parts working in sync to ensure people are fed with dignity.
Seeing firsthand one of the ways our community provides food security—how DDI works to serve those who need it most—reinforced for me that giving back with your time can make a tangible difference. Whether you’re prepping meals or serving guests, there’s a place for everyone.
It’s evident that DDI has been doing this incredible work for as long as St. Andrew’s Soup Kitchen has been running in Thunder Bay—over 40 years of consistent, compassionate service. Walking into that environment made me proud of what our community is capable of.
If you ever consider volunteering, know this: your time and kindness matters, and your presence is part of something bigger. I’m grateful to United Way and DDI for letting me be part of it.
