United Way of Thunder Bay, Indigenous Youth Achievement and Recognition Awards (IYARA), and Wasaya Airways are excited to announce the return of our ‘Run the North’ event, June 21 to 28, 2021!
We’re inviting individuals from all across Northwestern Ontario to join us in a regional community challenge to ‘Run the North’. We want to make this the largest race in NWO and have people from every community in our region participating! Let’s show our province how connected we are and get all communities on the map!
This virtual non-competitive race can be run anywhere and anytime between the event dates. Participants can walk, run, bike or hike so you can ‘run your race at your pace’. People can choose from a 1k or 5k distance so the whole family can participate too!
We held this event for the first time in 2020 and it was a huge success, raising over $20,000! We had 180 participants, representing 29 different communities from across the region – and one individual (with a love for NWO & the outdoors) participating all the way from Yellowknife!
All participants will receive a race kit including a medal and race bib. We’ll have a safe pick up location in Thunder Bay the week of the event. For anyone participating in our northern communities, these items will be shipped to you in advance.

Times & Location: ‘Run the North’ from ANYWHERE you are and ‘RUN YOUR RACE AT YOUR OWN PACE’ any time between the event dates
Registration Price (includes a race bib and a race medal):
Individual Registration – $25.00
Individual Registration for anyone OUTSIDE Ontario – $30.00
Kids Registration – $5.00 (with 2020’s medal)
If you are a family signing up and would like to only have 1 fundraising page as a family, the parent can select a normal Registration Ticket as seen above, confirm and move to the next step, and then select a variety of kids ticket ‘Items’ which would allow you to pay for your kids registration and medal BUT they would not have their OWN fundraising page.

Workplace Challenge – WIN A PIZZA HUT PIZZA PARTY: Workplace Challenge!!
Run The North has teamed up with Pizza Hut on a SWEET & CHEESY GIVEAWAY!! We challenge businesses / workplaces in our community to register 5 or more people from your office or workpalce for a chance to win a pizza party sponsored by Pizza Hut. The winning workplace will also win individual pizza vouchers for each staff member who participates. Register your workplace team at our registration page by selecting the “Registration Ticket 4 Workplace Group: Pizza Party” ticket option. This contest takes place from now until June 11 and we will draw a workplace winner June 14. Either have each person register themselves or select the number tickets you need and pay in one transaction. If you have a workplace with less then 5 staff, message us and we will work something out to ensure you get into the draw! If your community does not have a Pizza Hut, an alternative and similar prize will be given for your workplace!
Race Kit Pick Up Location & Dates: Race Kits will be available for pick up at a confirmed location the week of the event – stay tuned for details
Prizes: We will be giving away prizes for 2 different initiatives:
1. Fundraising: Additional fundraising is optional and encouraged! Ask your family, friends, colleagues, doctor, cab driver, or whoever your know for pledges in support of the event. For every $50 you raise (in addition to your registration fee), you will receive an entry into our fundraising prize draws (ex. if you fundraise $200, you will receive 4 ballots into the draw). We will also have 1 grand prize for top individual fundraiser! Prizes will be announced prior to the event!
You can use the online peer-to-peer fundraising platform to collect online credit donations – a tax receipt will be emailed to all donors instantly. Your personal fundraising page will be created instantly when you register for the event. OR you can use our paper pledge form to collect cash or cheque from your donors. All forms and monies must be handed in before the event when you come and pick up your race kits.
2. Get Social: Share your Run the North journey with us while you are out doing your race!! Take a photo before, during, or after your race with your race bib and / or medal and post it on your social media! Be sure to hashtag #RuntheNorth AND tag United Way of Thunder Bay (@uwaytbay) and Indigenous Youth Achievement & Recognition Awards (@nwoayara)
